What is IBAN?

IBAN is the international format of the account number. Banco de España calls it a unique account identifier and writes that for the countries of the SEA, including Spain, it is the account number by which the recipient is identified. [1]IBAN, according to Banco de España, consists of 24 characters: two letters of the country and 22 digits [2].

What is SEPA, and what countries are it?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a system in which payments in euros are equal, whether internal or cross-border [3]. Bancoidco de Liechtenstein contains information in the EU, , 3 countries reporting to EIR, and other countries. Therefore, the person who arrived in Spain may not have records, and the bank relies on income, employment and assets documents <x id unit="427"/> CatSalut describes it as follows: INSS recognizes the "right to help employees, pensioners, benefit recipients of Seguridad Social and their beneficiaries, i.e. children, spouses and partners [3]Legal framework - Reglamento (UE) 260/2012, which introduced IBAN as a single account identifier for euro transfers and direct debits [6].

The SEPA rules are only valid for payments in euros. Payment in or out of a country outside the zone is not based on them, the terms and time are dependent on the intermediary banks. If your country is in the SEA, check the relevant list.

How's the SEPA translation going, and how long is it going?

  1. The recipient gives IBAN and the name, the payment must be in euros.
  2. You create a transfer in a bank or an app. Before sending it, the euro zone bank proposes to check the match between the recipient and IBAN: the result is "consent", "almost" or "unconforming". [4].
  3. Bank cancels the amount. The normal transfer comes to the recipient's account no later than the day after the day of work after receipt of the funds by the recipient's bank, and the instantaneous within 10 seconds, 24 hours and any day of the year [3].
  4. Commissions: The sender's bank takes its expenses from you, the recipient's bank from its client (the "chared" model) [3].

Can you refuse to accept the Spanish IBAN account?

No, if it is a euro account in the SEA area, article 9 Reglamento (UE) 260/2012 prohibits requiring the account to be located in a particular country: Banco de España calls refusal to accept payment of a foreign IBAN "discrimination IBAN" [5][6]EU residents with a euro-paid account are entitled to accept and pay EU-related payments regardless of the country ’s code in IBAN [5].

If you are refused, Banco de España recommends that the organization be informed that it is obliged to accept IBAN from other EU countries, to submit a written claim and, if there is no result, to the competent authority. [5].

What happens if IBAN is wrong?

The sender usually answers for the error in the room. Banco de España writes that the bank automatically checks only the account identifier, the rest of the data in the SEPA translation serves as a message to the recipient. [1]If the bank has performed the transfer according to your stated IBAN, it is not responsible. [4].

Since 9 October 2025, eurozone banks have been required to offer a pre-shipment check free of charge (Reglamento (UE) 2024/886) [7]: If the system shows a discrepancy and you send it anyway, the payment goes through, and neither the bank nor the recipient is responsible for the error. [4]. If large amounts are spent, recheck IBAN and write to your bank when you make a mistake: return is not guaranteed.

Which depends on your case.
