Who's right and who's not.

It fits.

  • You have entered or are entering a face-to-face program at a university or other university and want to study more than 90 days
  • You have chosen an face-to-face course in Spanish or Catalan at the official language school or at the Instituto Cervantes centre.
  • Education is provided through secondary education, vocational training or school exchange programmes
  • You want to come with your family: spouse or partner and children can get permission from higher education.

Not appropriate.

  • Shorter than 90 days: short-term stay, not estancia
  • Completely online program: the law allows face-to-face and hybrid programs, and outside universities at least half of the classes should be in-service
  • The centre or programme is not registered in the official register: the institution must be recognized in Spain
  • You have to work full time: the status of studies allows only work with reservations

Student visa requirements and what they mean in practice

Which money is taken as a means

Method of step application

  1. Program and credit. You choose the program and pay for the matrix, we check the register center and the category conditions.

  3. The pitch. From abroad: Personal surrender to the consulate two months before the beginning; from Spain: OFCINA de Extranjería, for the higher education institutions, it can also be applied to the university itself.
  4. Decision. After applying to the Consulate, the Oficina de Extranjería decides in seven days, then the Consulate issues a visa within a month.
  5. Entry and TIE. For a period of more than 6 months, the TIE card is requested in person for a month.

Work during studies

Higher education gives the right to work automatically and automatically if the work is compatible with study but not more than 30 hours a week. Exceeding the limit results in the revocation of status. Work is limited to the autonomous community where authorization is granted and neighbouring settlement centres. Secondary education, language courses and other categories require a separate work permit. The programme does not require a separate authorization. Student family

The status of the family is given in higher education: spouse, registered or stable partner (year of cohabitation or common child), minor children and adult children who need support due to disability, and the need for communication documents, funds, medical coverage and a certificate of non-judiciality for adults. The family cannot work. A child born in Spain is granted permission automatically and the application is submitted to the Ministry of Education. 6 months. Extension

The extension is applied electronically two months before the end or three months after the second, the application is fine, the application is extended until the decision is made, the decision is made within a month, the silence means no one is allowed, for higher education and secondary education, up to two extensions, for volunteering and other activities, one for school exchange, no extension is given. The Supreme Court abolished the general list of procedures with mandatory electronic filing in July 2026 (art. 197.2), but article 55 still refers to the electronic extension. Documents and procedures.

After school and homologation

After higher education, you can stay at the Grado level for 24 months without extension to find a job in a specialty or open a business. You can apply 60 days before the end of status or within 90 days after the decision is 20 days, silence means consent. A family who has come with you can stay. The homologation of a foreign diploma is not necessary for the achievement of a student estancia: the conditions of article 53 do not require it; it is necessary when you want to work in a regulated profession; it is different from three procedures (RD 889/2022): homologation (profession), declaration of equivalence (Grado or Máster level) and convalution (to continue studying at a Spanish university). Typical Errors

Frequent issues

How much money do you need to show for a student visa?
100% IPREM per month per student: at IPREM 600 me (SEPE, 3 October 2026) is 600 me. The first member of the family is 450 me, each 300 me. The cost of studying is not counted.
Can you work on a student visa?
In full-time higher education, yes, up to 30 hours a week, if work is compatible with study, other categories need a separate permit.
Can you serve while in Spain?

How many times can I extend?
