What is an extension of stay

The Priórroga de estancia is an exceptional extension of the short-term stay in Spain beyond the initial period. For entry without a visa, it is not more than three additional months.

What is prórroga de estancia?

What documents are needed for prórroga?

Under article 49, the application is attached [1]:

  • Full passport valid longer than the extension period;
  • Evidence of reasons: for non-visa-free, they must be exceptional;
  • Confirmation of sufficient funds for the extension period;
  • The travel assistance policy, with the same coverage required for the short-term visa, for a period not less than the extension;
  • Guarantee of return: e.g., a ticket with a closed departure date before the end of the extension.

Who decides how long?

The extension may be granted by the Head of Comisaría General de Extranjería y Fronteras after the conclusion of the local Jefatura or Comisaría. [1].

The time limit for the decision on article 49.3 determines the additional provision seventh: a total of three months from the date on which the application was submitted to the secretariat. [1].

That we couldn't confirm

There is no list of "exceptional reasons" for a non-visional extension in the regulation: the decision remains with the police. Statistics of approvals and real time frames are not found in official sources. As the reasons in a particular Comisaría Barcelona are estimated, it is unknown, and this is a question for a lawyer or a gestor.
