Extension of the digital nomad's residence permit: what the law says

Which checks UGE when extending DNV

The law requires that the person should retain the conditions that have given access to the permit for the duration of the period (Disposión adicional séptima) and that the agency should be entitled to verify them after the issuance of the permit. How and when to extend: How to proceed

Supreme Court decision of 8 July 2026 (BOE 22 September 2026) repealed the general duty of electronic communication as set out in article 197.2 of Reglamento [5]This, according to our reading, is not applicable to DNV: the electronic processing of extensions is recorded in Ley 14/2013 (art. 76.3) [1][5]As UGE applies, we need to clarify.

What documents are needed and what does not the agency publish

The only public instruction of UGE on extensions (February 2018) calls a common set: a declaration marked "Renovación", a copy of TIE (if you have been in Spain for more than six months), a valid passport, a fee receipt; a declaration for family members on communication and cohabitation and a copy of a passport [2]There is no separate list for DNV in the document because DNV came later [2].

For the initial application UGE calls documents that are reasonably kept in hand and upon extension: three months ’ income on the bill or accounts with bank statements in the applicant ’s name, employer ’s letter, social security confirmation [3]The requirement of three months of relationship to the initial application UGE does not apply to those who already have a permit or visa because it has already been confirmed [3]Whether to re-check it at the extension does not say.

What to Change With a New SMI And Income Declined

The income thresholds are tied to SMI. For 2026, this is 2,849 me per month (34,188 I per year) per claimant. [3]Which SMI applies to the January and February extensions until the decree is issued and whether UGE compares the income on the extension to the new SMI, the sources do not report. Safe option: confirm the existing threshold. If the income is lower, UGE allows the difference to be closed for the duration of the authorization. [3]; even this option should be agreed before delivery.

Change of employer, client, travel and absence

Any change in conditions must be reported to the UGE within 30 days (Disposión adicional séptima) [1]The change of employer to DNV: a separate issue to be resolved before submission. Absence in Spain: for DNV Ley 14/2013, does not specify a minimum period of residence. The limitation of 183 days is recorded for extension no lucrativa (art. 64.2 f Reglamento) rather than DNV [1][6]The tax residence is determined by other rules: Tax residence and residence permitTravel during extension is agreed in advance.

The Department's procrastination and silence

If the window is missed, the delivery within 90 days after the end of the window will still extend the authorization, but the sanction process is possible (art. 76.3) [1]After 90 days, the law no longer protects such a submission; how to act must be decided individually: another ground or a new application. What after five years

For Ley 14/2013, three years and two years are given. For larga duración Reglamento, five years of legal continuous residence are required (arts. 176 and 183); we have not found a direct indication that the DNV period is in that period. Typical DNV Extension Errors

• Waiting for the last days of the windows and getting late.
• Resume on three years ago: income, insurance and contract must meet the conditions on the date of delivery, and the original package from three years ago is not counted [1].
• Do not report change of employer within 30 days [1].
• Continues to work for clients with a share above 20% of Spanish company activities [1].
• Postponed alta to Segurid Social: UGE calls it a condition and a violation can lead to the termination of the permit [3].
• Take windows from other people's retreadings: 90 days are left in law and 60 days are left in UGE [1][2].
