Studying estancia in Spain: programs and what to check

The study estáncia (autorización de estancia de larga Duración por estudios) allows for more than 90 days of study in Spain, but this is not a residence: the status is tied to the program and centre, and the five years before the PJP is 50 per cent.

Information material, not individual legal opinion: Prepared using IE; checked by a subject matter specialist before publication has not yet been completed; conditions apply to a particular situation and may change.
Short
  • Estancia is not equal to residencia. This permit is for more than 90 days for study, exchange, volunteering or formatting (art. 52 Real Decreto 1155/2024), the duration of the programme is one year, and for higher education it is the same as the official period of study. [1].
  • The program must be full and complete. The university needs a minimum of 90% credit, the rest of the program requires 90% credit; not university formats are counted at the face of 50% or less [1].
  • The Centre is checked by register. For higher education, it is a RUCT and a register of higher education centres, for the rest of the non-university education centres. If the centre is not recognized, the application may be rejected (art. 54.8) [1].
  • Only higher education can be automatically employed: In the other categories, you need a separate job application, you can't work for the student's family. [1][2].
  • The funds count from IPREM: 100% per student and 75% and 50% per family member per month, 600 per cent per student per month per IPREM 2026 [1][4].
  • The time on estancia at 5 years for long-term residence is 50%, and only if you are already in the residence at the time of delivery [1].

Training estancia in Spain: What is this status

Estancia de larga Duración por estudios, movilidad de alumnos, servicios de volntariado o actividades formulaas: this is the resolution that article 52 of the regulations (Real Decreto 1155/2024) gives to those who are allowed to stay in Spain longer than ninety calendar days for one of the five purposes. [1]Spanish law distinguishes between estancia, i.e. stay, and residencia, i.e. residence, which means three practical things for you: status is tied to the program, it ends with it, and it is subject to its rules of work, family and five years of service.

The time frame and the 50% rule are taken from articles 55 and 176 of the regulations. [1]As is considered to be the years before the YPM, it depends on your dates and is described in a separate article on the five-year account.

Which programmes are suitable: five categories of article 52

The law does not allow for "any study" on estancia, and the list is closed, and each category has its own format and rules for extension. [1].

CategoryWhat goes inFormatExtension
Higher educationUniversity programmes, university degrees, masters in vocational education, non-university higher educationEither either directly or hybridly, full load (at least 90% of credits)Twice.

VolunteeringNon-profit organization programmes from the rosterNo payment except for reimbursement of expenses and pocket moneyOnce.
Formal activitiesLanguage courses, teaching assistants, medical examination training, professional certificatesIn total or mixed, not less than 50% of the faceOnce.

For language courses, the law is tougher: class at face to face, at an official language school or at a centre accredited by the Institute of Independents or a similar body of autonomy, and the language should not be your home or official language in your country. [1]The extension of this course under article 55.5 requires a course in the language school or a DELE diploma or examination examination. Language courses and training permitsIII. Higher programmes and enrolment: Spanish Magistrate's Office for Foreigners.

Check before payment: centre, format and load

The solution depends not on the beauty of the school's website, but on a few formal features. [1][2]:

  1. Recognized center. For higher education, this entry is made in the RUCT (the register of universities, centres and diplomas) or the register of higher education centres. For secondary and vocational education, it is the State register of non-university centres or the regional register. Until the register of higher education centres is established, the transitional rule is adopted by the centres with the official recognition of an administration. [1].
  2. Diploma. The programme must lead to a diploma recognized in Spain, and the law lists the cases exhaustively for formal action.
  3. Load. The full load of the university is a minimum of 90% credit. The evening course "for general development" does not fall into this category.
  4. Format. Remote program not suitable. Hybrid format allowed within category rules.
  5. What exactly you pay for. The law requires that the rights to write and apply (matrícula or equal document) be paid, not the entire course forward. The conditions for return if a visa is refused must be fixed in the contract before payment: this is the editorial board, and there is no rule on this.

If the centre is not recognized, the application may be rejected under article 54.8; therefore, the review of the registry is cheaper than the lost advance payment.

Money and insurance: what they think of as a study place

For a student, it takes a sum equal to 100% IPREM per month for the first member of the family 75% for each next 50% [1][2]. IPREM for 2026 is 600 € per month [4]No amount is charged for the cost of the training itself, but if the full period of residence is paid, the maintenance is not to be confirmed, but the payment must be documented. [1][2].

The source of funds may be money, family assistance, scholarships and grants, and medical insurance is needed for a company admitted to work in Spain, with a cover similar to the basic list of the public health system. Where and when to serve

A visa is applied for abroad: it is considered to be a request for estancia at the same time. You must apply for it at least two months before you start your studies, unless there is a documented reason to file later. [1]The regulations of the Oicina de Extranjería provide for seven days ’ authorization, with a positive response issued by the consulate within one month [1]The Consulate in Moscow has been accepting applications for study through the BLS centres for applicants from its district since 1 June 2026. [5].

Spanish people are served with a residence, and those who are legally in Spain, such as another status, can apply for higher education at least two months before they begin school or end their current status. [1][2]I'm not going to say anything. [1]If estancia lasts more than six months, TIE needs to be processed within a month [1]. Work, family, extension: What gives status

Status does not open all doors in the same way.

  • Work. Estancia for higher education automatically permits employment and self-employment up to 30 hours a week if they are compatible with study. The rest require a separate application, usually from the employer. [1][6]I'll give you more details: Can you work with student permits?.
  • Family. Family support is provided only for higher education and medical specialization. [1][2]I'll give you more details: The student ’s family in Spain.
  • Extension. The application may be made two months before the end and within three months after (after the end of the fine), the application shall extend the previous authorization until the decision is reached. [1][2]I'll give you more details: Extension of the training estancia.
  • After school. After higher, post-compulsory secondary education and part of the vocational programmes, it is possible to move to residence and work, and university graduates with a bachelor's degree (grado) level have a separate way of finding work. [1][2]I'll give you more details: Post-graduate: work and change of status.

Typical Errors

  • The language course is chosen as a "light" version of the university. The language rules are different: all, accredited centre, extension depends on the result. [1].
  • They take an online program and find it out that it's not in the category.
  • They pay a year in advance without the conditions for return if they refuse a visa.
  • They consider the cost of training to be part of the confirmed funds. [1].
  • They expect that estancia will count at five years in full. [1].
  • Family budget is planned with a spouse ’s job. [1].
  • Pass extension window: two months before and three months after end [1].

When Individual Review Is Needed

He needs you to go beyond a simple "take and drop" scenario, which is a partial load, a hybrid or remote part of the program, a different status application from Spain, a family with children, a previous denial of a visa, a change of program in the middle of a year, or a change of base from estancia to residence. In such cases, the outcome depends on the documents and facts of your case: check with a lawyer or a gestor before paying for it. programmes.
