Russian rights: 15 steps towards Spanish

1. You can understand how many Russian rights you can drive.

   Under article 21 of the Reglamento General de Productores (Real Decreto 818/2009), third-country rights are valid in Spain until six months have elapsed since you acquired residencia norma, a habitual residence, rights to be in Spanish, with an official translation or a model of the Geneva or Vienna Conventions. Only with national rights and a passport.

2. Set the date from which the six months pass

   The law considers the period from the acquisition of residencia normal. If residence is not confirmed, section 21.2 RGC counts six months from legal entry into Spain. What DGT and police take as the date of the start of the residence (visa, residence permit, TIE) is not officially scheduled, so it is safer to take the earliest possible date.

3. Know what the risk of driving after a deadline is.

   After six months, Russian rights are not valid in Spain. According to DGT, driving with third country rights that are not exchanged in time, a fine of 200 (if the rights can be exchanged) to 500 (if the rights can be exchanged) is not applicable. For Russian exchange rights, therefore count on the upper border.

4. Select: Motor school or por libre

   DGT allows for self-study and examination without autoescuela, motor schools. For road practice without a car school, Jefatura gives lycencia de aprendizaje, a study permit: only after a given theory, for up to eight months. Five years, a relative, a friend or a neighbor, and without pay.

5. Go to the CRC medical team

   Informe de aptitude psicofísica issues the Centre de Reconocimiento de Investors (CRC), a private centre authorized by DGT. The opinion is valid 90 days from the date of issue, during which time the application must be submitted for the examination.

6. Pay for the Tasa 2.1

   The fee for the customary law exams is tasa 2.1, sede DGT 94.05 me. It covers two attempts (convocatorias); after two failures, they apply again and pay again.

7. Apply for the DGT Barcelona examination

   Self-supplier Modelo 04 with medical certificate and receipt: online via the DGT with Cl@ve, digital certificate or DNIe, or in person at Jefatura on a suite of valid residence permits. DGT reports after processing, no time limit guaranteed.

8. Prepare for the Test Language Theory

   Modelo 04 theory on B is produced in Spanish, autonomous languages (in Barcelona, Catalan), English, French or German, and is a version of lectura fácil, simplified text. Russian is not on the list. Free dgt.es tests are similar to the format test.

9. Take the theoretical exam.

   The theory is performed in a test format with response options, like DGT's training tests. The result is published in a consultation de noteas on a sede DGT. This theory has been in operation for two years, and it has to be practiced.

10. Practice driving by Spanish rules

    Experience from Russia helps, but the examiner assesses by DGT criteria: priority in roundabouts, lanes, pedestrians, manoeuvres. With lyniccia de aprendizaje, restrictions apply: not faster than 40 km/h in the city and 80 km/h outside the city, without a trailer, without motorways on holidays and the day before.

    When you need help: a long history in Russia, but no experience in Spanish, a few classes with an instructor are often cheaper than an over-thinking exercise.

11. Take the practical exam.

12. Permiso provisional and rookie rules

    After practice, you are issued with a temporary permit for three months and only for Spain. From this day on you are a conducor novel: V-13 (L) is mandatory for the first year, alcohol is not higher than 0.15 mg/l in the air exhaled for two years, at the start of 8 points.

13. Get a plastic card.

    DGT's permanent rights are sent by post, DGT's in about six weeks, and B's rights are in effect for ten years after 65 years (art. 12 RGC).

14. Decide what to do with Russian rights

    We have not found any requirements to surrender Russian rights to Spanish candidates on the DGT pages (the original is taken from the exchange). In Spain, they are not valid after six months of residence and the rules of that country apply for travel to other countries.

    When you need help, you're going to drive Russian rights in Russia or extend them while living in Spain, which is a question of Russian rules, and we don't consult them.

15. Watch your score.

    New drivers start with 8 points and get 12 after two years without losing points, the balance can go up to 15. A rookie with 8 points loses his license faster than an experienced driver.
