Renewal of residence in Spain: deadlines, documents and procedure

The extension of the residence permit is given in the window around the end of the permit: as a general rule, two months before the end and up to three months after the end. The documentation set depends on the basis, and below we select it for each type of permit.

When to apply for extension: windows and consequences

The application window for Reglamento (Real Decreto 1155/2024) is almost identical: the application is filed within two months of the end of the permit. The application extension is extended until the decision is reached. The application is extended within three months of the end, but the agency is entitled to start a fine case. The text of the law is "two months" and "three months", rather than "60 and 90 days", as many websites write.

The delay of up to three months after the end of the sentence is a minor offence (article 52 Ley Orgánica 4/2000), a fine of up to 500 y. If more than three months have passed since the permit was completed, the window is closed: article 53 of the same Ley Orgánica makes such a situation a serious violation with a fine of 501 to 10,000 y.

The permit is valid until 15 March 2027. The window "before" opens around 15 January 2027, the three-month tail ends around 15 June 2027. Reglamento does not specify how to count months and whether the first day is on time, so it is more practical to serve in the middle of the window than on the first or last day. Modalities

Find the end date. It is listed in the Resolution and on the TIE card. If the dates are different, we count it earlier and we specify it with the agency.
Check the conditions of your foundation. Funds, insurance, work or activities, education of children, days of residence in Spain, taxes and contributions.
Get the papers. Order translations and apostiles where new checks are needed: Extension document check sheet.
Pay the fee. This is a 790 model, code depends on the basis. The Ministry's reference lists show a fee when it comes to the deposit, it needs to be paid within 10 working days. Save the receipt: How to Pay the Duty online.
Make a statement. The representative shall submit, by notary power or by apud acta (art. 197), through an electronic sede or, for a number of reasons, in person, in the ocina de extrandjería: digital certificate and representativeThe mandatory electronic submission on the list from article 197.2 was cancelled by the Supreme Court on 8 July 2026, so the method is checked on the date of submission.

After the decision, take the TIE. The card shall be issued one month after the extension notification (arts. 64 and 81): TIE and Huellas.

Documents on grounds

All extensions have a common set of applications: a formal application, a copy of the full passport and a paid fee. If there are children of school age, a school certificate is required: without it, the agency gives a month or otherwise the permit is not extended. Foreign documents are served with a jury and apostille.

DNV extension is going in a different order

The digital nomad ’s permit is extended not by Reglamento but by article 76 Ley 14/2013 for two years, while the conditions for authorization remain, the application is submitted electronically through UGE. If it is submitted within 90 days of the authorization being completed, the permit is also extended until the decision is reached, without prejudice to a possible case of violation. The deadline for filing before the end of the article is not specified, so we file in advance, and we submit the permit in advance. We did not find a formal list of documents for the extension of DNV in public sources. It is wise to prepare a contract or letter from an employer, income confirmation, insurance and social security registration. Extend or apply for long-term residence

If you have five years of legal continuous residence, you may apply the larga Duración permit instead of the extension (art. 183 Reglamento), which does not violate the continuity of absence for up to six consecutive months, if they do not exceed 10 months in five years.

Typical Errors

They think windows are the same for all bases, they have DNVs and they have their own rules.
They delay the power for the last days of the windows, and then they come back and they don't have enough.
They take a three-month tail for the time available, it's for unforeseen, not for planning: a fine is possible.
No lucrativa shows one month's funds instead of the whole extension period, and insurance ends earlier.
They don't take a certificate about a compulsory school.
Forget about the passport: if he has lost his strength and you have not started replacing him, the permit must be terminated (art. 200 Reglamento).
The receipt and the copy of the package are not kept: without them, it is difficult to prove the deadline.
They leave Spain without checking when they're coming back: autorización de regreso and travel during extension.

Frequent issues

How much for the extension of residence permits in Spain?

As a general rule, Reglamento is to be granted within two months of the date of the end of the permit, and the application is to be extended until the decision is reached.

Can you apply for an extension after the permit is completed?

Yes, within three months of the end, the previous permit is also extended until the decision is reached, but the agency is entitled to initiate a violation case: for a minor violation, a fine of up to 500 y. After three months, the window is closed, and urgent review is required.

What happens if the agency doesn't answer in time?

In the case of no lucrativa, employment, self-employment and family reunification, silence for three months means approval. After the extension of the study term estancia, one month is a period of silence. In the case of no lucrativa and employment, the agency issues a certificate of renewal in silence at the request of the applicant.

Can we leave Spain while we're considering an extension?

Should the residence permit be extended if there were five years already?

Not always. After five years of legal uninterrupted residence, larga duración can come and then they serve it on it. If you're going to fit, it depends on the execs and status history: check before delivery.
