Item 112
What is NIE, and does it give you the right to live in Spain?
NIE (número de identidad de extranjero) under article 205 Real Decreto 1155/2024 is a personal, unique and consistent number that is entered in all documents of an alien [1]. The Dirección General de la Policía assigns it de oficio, without application, to those on whom the procedure for a residence document has been initiated and on visas entitling them to stay longer than 90 days without a separate autorización de estancia or residencia (Article 205.3). [1]The status number itself doesn't give you any.
